Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms

Nudura is a type of Insulated Concrete Form (ICF). This particular flavour of ICF was created by Canadian former builder, Murray Snider, who is now President and CEO of Nudura.

“The forms are interlocking modular units that are dry-stacked (without mortar) and filled with concrete.” Wikipedia

Like other types of ICF, Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms are basically like big Lego blocks made out of polystyrene. You put the blocks together and then fill the centre with concrete.

Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms are a bit like big Lego blocks. They're connected together onsite and then the centre cavity is filled with concrete.

Nudura in New Zealand

I was excited and a little apprehensive when I took a call on Sunday afternoon from Chevy Chisholm, General Manager of Nudura NZ. I’d been emailing Chevy ever since I came across an article about Murray’s speaking tour of New Zealand. At that point I didn’t know much about Murray Snider. I didn’t really know much about ICF.

Chevy Chisholm is General Manager of Nudura NZ and she hosted CEO Murray Snider recently for a speaking tour of New Zealand.

The call started with Chevy explaining to me that they were ‘half way between Wanaka and Queenstown’. The only thing I know of in that location is the famous Cardrona Hotel, and that’s exactly where they had stopped on their whirlwind tour in order to get a internet connection for our Skype call.

Nestled in the comfort of a friendly bar and situated amongst the crisp, autumn colours of Central Otago, I was reminded by Murray of just how lucky we are to live in such a stunningly beautiful place. It’s always refreshing to have visitors appreciate what many of us take for granted.

I also find it refreshing to have visitors remind us of the relative poor quality of our housing stock. More importantly though, many visitors come here offering well developed solutions for doing things a better way. And I believe that’s the case with Nudura and with ICF in general.

Insulated Concrete Forms offer many benefits. According to Chevy Chisolm of Nudura NZ, it's 30% cheaper than standard concrete block, 60% cheaper than tilt slab. The construction method also offers great sound proofing, comfort and energy efficiency.

Murray Snider

Murray has been involved in the building industry since 1978. He started building at the age of 16 and had his own building company by the time he was 19. When he was first introduced to ICF, he immediately saw the benefits and became a distributor of an early ICF product.

His interest grew further as he saw the comfort, efficiency and cost benefits. Eventually Murray founded his own version of ICF which now includes a complete system of components and a method for high quality building.

Nudura now has 150 distributors globally. As well as running his company, Murray is the President of the Insulating Concrete Form Association (ICFA), and a member of the Expanded Polystyrene Manufacturers Association (EPSMA).
