John Stulen is Communications Director and a Co-Founder at Innovatek

John Stulen lives is the heart of New Zealand’s forestry industry in Rotorua. He originally studied Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University, Ontario and has been involved in the wood industry almost ever since. Through events and digital platforms such as WoodWorks, John is particularly interested in promoting innovative timber solutions. From multi-residential, through to commercial and industrial, there is almost no limit to the use of wood in our buildings.

Good Wood

Wood is a good building material. And timber is an important part of New Zealand’s overall economy. We have an attraction to wood, whether we’re enjoying a forest or surrounding ourselves with the sight and smell of timber. Wood has always been a favourite building material, ever since we started making huts. Now, modern innovations have expanded the potential uses even further. We’ve engineered out some of limitations and irregularities of lumbered wood to produce wood panels and structural members for almost any application.

Engineered Timber

Modern wood innovations include Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL). CLT is a great substitute for a wall panels. LVL can be manufactured into structurally consistent beams far longer than any tree trunk. With these, and other timber products, engineers can now design all types of commercial, residential and even industrial buildings, in wood.
