207: Design Basics Woman-Centric Home Design

Natalie Wendling is Executive Vice President of Design Basics.

I’m pleased to have interviewed a number of inspiring women designers on the Home Style Green podcast. Marie Oursler, Lindsay Schack, Caroline Pidcock and Karen Mason to name just a few. We’ve also heard from unique women consultants such as Tricia Love, Jennifer Crawford and Caroline Blazovsky, and female builders such as Polly Bart.

I believe everyone brings their unique experience, values and skills to the process of creating a home. Some people add their special perspective to their practice simply as the way they do things. For the team at Design Basics however, they’ve chosen to highlight Woman-Centric Home Design as a unique point of difference.

Design Basics have done their homework on what women want. Woman-Centric Home Design is based on extensive research including questioning and also observing families in their homes. The concept originated from the idea that women make most of the purchasing decisions in the household.

The Four Lenses

As part of Woman-Centric Home Design, Design Basics have defined four ‘lenses’ through which women typically see different parts of the home. By labelling and colour-coding areas for Entertaining, De-Stressing, Storing, and Flexibility, Design Basics have created ‘Livability at a Glance™️

Colour-coded annotations makes it easy to view different floor plans and compare them according to the balance of their four lenses. You can even take a quick Livability at a Glance™️ quiz to find out which areas are more important to you.

Drop Zone

With three children in my own home, I’m forever picking up shoes, school bags and sports gear. I really like the idea of a ‘drop zone’ – a transition area between outside and inside for dumping gear and storing shopping bags. This is just one practical example of the livability concepts arising from Woman-Centric Home Design.

The Design Basics website is full of tools and resources along with a comprehensive book of floor plans. You can also follow them on various social platforms including:
