When did home ownership become the holy grail?

KiwiBuild is stepping up today, with Hon Phil Twyford’s announcement of the criteria for the Government’s ‘affordable’ housing programme at Buildnz | designex summit.

There’s talk, and even some decent plans, for making space and resources available. Prefabrication is being suggested as a likely pathway for New Zealand manufactured building. Minister Twyford also acknowledged this morning that urban planning and transport play an important role.

But what about quality? Interesting this is the first question from the audience here at the BuildNZ KiwiBuild Summit.

KiwiBuild is definitely a huge opportunity to move to a much higher level of quality and health. I just hope these aren’t trumped by the push for quantity and a definition of ‘affordable’ that doesn’t account for ongoing running and health costs.
